Hej,
Need an energy boost and help to define your team's direction? Learn more about our latest session with Arla focusing on how to systemise innovation to become an engine of growth. We've also gathered new insights on the global energy transition revealing (once again) how renewable energy is booming! Finally, don't miss out on Fossilfritt Sverige's upcoming event on our industries' climate transition. Let's jump in, shall we?

Systemising Innovation for Scalable Success

Brianne, Business Designer at Another Tomorrow, presents insights from the innovation work at a global organisation

A few weeks ago, we had the privilege of hosting Arla's Global Innovation team at our space to explore where their team is heading in the next years. The key theme was how to make innovation a core part of their DNA, ensuring it becomes an engine of growth across the entire organisation.

Together, we delved into how other corporations – Scandinavian and global alike – are applying AI and what processes have proven to be successful when it comes to embedding innovation into daily business. From systemising idea generation across the organisation to turning concepts into scaleable solutions and market-ready products.

As Matthew Fafoutis, Sprint Lead at Arla Innovation, put it: "I am sure I can speak for everyone that since last week our heads have been spinning with all the information, insights, and discussions you have sparked! Many thanks again."

Our approach? We started with targeted research and in-depth interviews, which we distilled into digestible two-pagers and presented back to the team. These then became the foundation for collaborative exercises, guiding Arla Innovation to envision where they want to be in the next 5 years.

2024 is likely the year of peak emissions

DNV's latest report Energy Transition Outlook 2024 reveals a massive milestone: Global emissions from energy have (most likely) peaked. But current forecasts predict that they're not declining fast enough with a potential warming of 2.2°C by the end of the century, missing the 1.5°C target set out in the Paris Agreement. To accelerate the transition, we need to focus on what's working and where we are falling short.

On the positive side, solar energy and battery storage are booming. In 2023, global solar installations jumped by 80% to 400 GW, driven by falling battery prices, which dropped 14% last year. This trend is making solar power more accessible and helping electric vehicles (EVs) become cheaper, keeping us on course for EVs to make up 50% of new car sales by 2031. In China, these advancements are already reducing petroleum demand and pushing coal out of the power sector.

However, the transition is lagging in hard-to-electrify sectors, where technologies like hydrogen and carbon capture (CCS) are struggling to scale due to cost overruns and lack of market support. Without stronger policies, such as a carbon price, these sectors won’t make the necessary progress.

DNV's outlook emphasises the efficiency gains from doubling electrification over the next 25 years, urging policymakers to support renewable technologies and prioritise solutions for difficult sectors like offshore wind and hydrogen.
