💚 Which climate policies have actually cut emissions?

*|MC:SUBJECT|*
Hej,
How have greenhouse gas emissions developed over the past 30 years in the EU? Have they increased or decreased? Scroll down to find out 👀 Also, Creative Director Joe has been teaching the next generation of digital creatives on using hackathons as an innovation tool. Plus, researchers have identified which combinations of climate policies have actually cut emissions over the last two decades. All this in today's newsletter!

Igniting innovation one hackathon at a time

Some of the brilliant minds Joe got to teach last week

From rethinking Spotify to the future of teenage nutrition with Arla, hackathons are one of the tools we use to help organisations spark creativity, tackle challenges, inspire collaboration and ignite innovation. Our Creative Director Joe Coppard held a session on just that the other day over at Hyper Island.

The new batch of Digital Creative students got to learn more about hackathons as an innovation tool, how to run them and what impact they can have when executed right.

Head over to Joe's LinkedIn post to see some more impressions from the day. And if you're curious about how a hackathon could help your organisation reach new levels, reach out.

Climate transition: Perception vs reality

Kunskapsglappet by Fossilfritt Sverige
Do you know how much the amount of electricity from solar and wind surged between 2012 and 2022 across the globe? It's an astounding 550% increase. Yes, you read that right. But chances that most of us expected a much lower figure are pretty high.

According to a recent survey by Fossilfritt Sverige, there's quite a disparity between people's perception and the reality of the climate transition. This is a problem because the knowledge gap can limit the desired impact of climate policies. That's why Fossilfritt Sverige have now launched Kunskapsglappet, The Knowledge Gap, with the aim to shine light on the gap between perception and reality and the already existing solutions and opportunities. Which in its turn can help accelerate the pace of the climate transition.

"We have never really had a better opportunity to transition than right now", it says on their website which is a treasure trove of information about the climate transition. Take a moment to explore it and test your climate knowledge with their quiz. We can almost guarantee that you'll learn something new.

Climate policies that helped cut emissions

To meet the Paris Agreement’s climate goals, we need a clearer understanding of which policies actually cut emissions on a large scale. A recent study published in Science analysed 1,500 climate policies implemented between 1998 and 2022 across 41 countries to identify impactful policy combinations leading to large emissions reductions.

63 successful policy interventions were identified that reduced emissions by up to 1.8 billion metric tonnes of CO2. This highlights the power of well-designed, price-based instruments in these effective policy mixes, emphasising the crucial efforts required to close the emissions gap and achieve global climate targets.
