The Fossil Fuels Conversation: A Reset is Coming

Illustration: Ayumi Takahashi (TAAK)
According to the annual trend briefing 'The WIRED World in 2025' the phrase “reducing emissions” is on its way out, making room for a stronger, no-nonsense message—“phasing out fossil fuels.” Why? Because vague goals won’t cut it anymore.

By 2025, expect global leaders and scientists to shift focus from soft targets to actionable plans to phase out fossil fuels. The push is already visible: across the globe, countries and cities are setting their sights on a future without fossil fuels. The stakes couldn’t be higher—existing fossil fuel infrastructure alone could exhaust our carbon budget for a liveable planet.

This reset in language isn’t just a semantic upgrade; it’s a rallying cry for transformative action. By reframing the narrative, we undermine greenwashing and amplify the urgency for clean energy.

Putting things into perspective

The other day, our CEO Staffan recommended a webinar by SEB on the effects of the recent US election and the outcome of COP29 on the green transition.

The main take-away was this: Despite delays and challenges including a push for looser fossil fuel regulations (especially in the US), the transition will continue.

Make sure to listen to it during the holidays!

Happy holidays!
